Avril Herng is a Malaysian novelist known for publishing her first full-length mystery novel at the age of 11. She is the author of the Laura Taylors mystery series and the recipient of the Malaysia Outstanding Young Novelist Award and the SEA Extraordinary Young Novelist Award. 

Avril Herng was born and raised in Selangor, Malaysia. She began writing stories in childhood, initially creating handwritten storybooks before developing longer manuscripts. She completed her first full-length novel at age 11. 

Her family has been involved in supporting her writing, with her elder sister assisting in editing her manuscripts. In addition to writing, Herng has participated in extracurricular activities including music and sports.

In 2024, Avril Herng published her debut novel, Laura Taylors: The Case of the Phantom's Emerald. The mystery novel, approximately 260 pages in length and featuring over 40 distinct characters, follows a young detective investigating the disappearance of a legendary emerald. Its sophisticated structure has drawn comparisons to classic Victorian-style mystery storytelling while preserving the emotional wonder and curiosity of childhood. Reviewers and literary discussions have highlighted Herng’s ability to sustain tension, manage large character dynamics, and weave suspense with remarkable maturity. The publication drew media attention due to Herng's age at the time of writing.

In 2025, she published a second installment in the series, Laura Taylors and The Shadow of Three. Media coverage has described the series as planned as a trilogy.

Avril Herng served as the illustrator for her novels, producing both the cover design and interior illustrations. In 2026, illustrated editions of Laura Taylors: The Case of The Phantom’s Emerald and Laura Taylors and The Shadow of Three were released under the subtitle The Illustrated Journey.

Following the release of her novels, Avril Herng participated in book-related events in Malaysia. In conjunction with the release of the illustrated editions of her novels, Herng began a book tour in Malaysia in 2025–2026. Launch events were held at BookXcess IOI Mall Damansara and The Sunway Library by BookXcess at Sunway Square Mall.
